China has endured much hardship in its history, as Iris Chang shows in her ably researched The Rape of Nanking, a book that recounts the horrible events in that eastern Chinese city under Japanese occupation in the late 1930s. Nanking, she writes, served as a kind of laboratory in which Japanese soldiers were taught to slaughter unarmed, unresisting civilians, as they would later do throughout Asia. Likening their victims to insects and animals, the Japanese commanders orchestrated a campaign in which several hundred thousand--no one is sure just how many--Chinese soldiers and noncombatants alike were killed. Chang turns up an unlikely hero in German businessman John Rabe, a devoted member of the Nazi party who importuned Adolf Hitler to intervene and stop the slaughter, and who personally saved the lives of countless residents of Nanking. She also suggests that the Japanese government pay reparations and apologize for its army's horrific acts of 60 years ago.

YA?The events in this book are horribly off-putting, which, paradoxically, is why they must be remembered. Chang tells of the Sino-Japanese War atrocities perpetrated by the invading Japanese army in Nanking in December 1937, in which roughly 350,000 soldiers and civilians were slaughtered in an eight-week period, many of them having been raped and/or tortured first. Not only are readers given many of the gory details?with pictures?but they are also told of the heroism of some members of a small foreign contingent, particularly of a Nazi businessman who resided in China for 30 years. The story of his bravery lends the ironic touch of someone with evil credentials doing good. Once the author finishes with the atrocities, she proceeds with the equally absorbing and much easier-to-take story of what happened to the Nazi businessman when he returned to Germany and the war ended. This by itself is material for a movie. The author tells why the Japanese government not only allowed the atrocities to occur but also refused, and continues to refuse, to acknowledge that they happened. She is quite evenhanded in reminding readers that every culture has some episode like this in its history; what makes this one important is the number of people killed and tortured, the sadism, and the ongoing Japanese denial of responsibility. Too Long Forgotten

This seems to be a well researched and well documented book that stands as a testimony to the sheer brutality and savage nature of the Japanese who invaded China in the 1930's. By itself it is a shocking glimpse into the nature of WWII; indeed of all wars. Combined with the many other, well documented, instances of the brutality of the Japanese soldier, at all levels of command, its credibility is not in question. I am a veteran of 25 years of active duty military service, mainly Special Ops to include multiple tours in Vietnam, and still I am appalled at the levels of violence meted out to (mainly) Chinese civilians by the Japanese. The heroes in this tragedy were far outnumbered, and they knew that they were at the time, yet still they did more to alleviate the widespread suffering and degradation of the Chinese than one could ever imagine possible. To compound this travesty, and the countless other crimes incurred by prisoners of war and civilians at the hands of the Japanese military, very little was done to punish the guilty; much has been done to actually downplay the barbarity. I have no sympathy for the Japanese in the eventual devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Provacatory...and RIGHTFULLY so.

Iris Chang has been accused of being overly partial to the Chinese, and palpably accusatory to the Japanese. If so--so what? Last time I looked, this was not a history thesis submitted to the stuffed shirts for critical review in a scholarly journal. She has written a highly-readable book detailing Japanese atrocities concerning the Chinese city of Nanking in the years prior to WW2, and has done it exquisitely well. Without a doubt there were things she could have gone about differently, but overall, she has attempted (and succeeded) to tell the story that NEEDED to be told. Why has history been silent for so long concerning this shame? Where were the naysayers who criticized her then? Her book is an important addition to what LITTLE has been told about Imperial Japan. When one thinks of what else she could have written if not for her sad demise....

This books evokes so many unrest feeling about Japan as a civil and responsible society. On one hand, Japanese are docile and ,after WW 2, peace-loving in the eyes of Americans and Europeans. We even feel sorry for dropping "the Bombs" on them. On the other hand, Japanese government is such an outright liar about the most basic facts of their military past when they face their neighbors such as China and Korea. Most Japanese citizens, not just the right wing politicians, are blissfully ignorant about the atrocity committed by Japanese soldiers in World War II. Those war crimes against humanity were committed everywhere they occupied in Asia theater, but in much larger and more indescribable scale in China and Korea. "Comfort Women" issue is a more frequently reported in US media due to our close relationship with South Korea as trading and strategic partner. Nanjing Massacre is much less known in US and Europe. Nanjing Massacre was one of the countless atrocities committed by Japanese soldiers in World War II. Only Japanese citizens who study outside Japan can find out about these historical facts. Japanese government has always muffled about World War II history, regardless which political party is in charge. This is a ticking bomb in East Asia, waiting to be exploded. Many of us, Americans, have difficulty in understanding what "sincere apology" really mean to Chinese and Korean. Here are some baselines. It will be a giant step for Japanese government to erect monuments in Toyko and other major cities in Japan that record those atrocity. It also needs to restore the correct facts of World War II history in school books so that the next and coming generations of Japanese will never commit such gruesome crime against humanity. Ignorance of your own history is not a bliss. It only ensure the path of repeating the same mistake. Even there are a great deal of economic benefit in maintaining trading relationship with Japan, Chinese and Korean will never truly forgive Japan until Japanese government takes these concrete steps to finish the unfinished business in World War II.
