I love this book!
By Xbox_Girl
I discovered this book on Kickstarter when it was finished funding and the chapters were already completed on Wordpress. When I read the story on Wordpress, I loved it so much I wished I could've pledged to the Kickstarter. Now that it's on Amazon, I had to have this book right away. It's just so much fun to read. The characters are so unique and their interactions are well-written. I felt so many emotions while reading this book. It's just too incredible to describe in words!

If I borrow a book from the library or read a story online, I typically never buy the book after having done so, but this was an exception. Yes, it's THAT good.

And another thing, I rarely write reviews, but for this, I had to!

So what am I trying to say? Stop reading my review and go buy the book. ^_^

over-long and overly-dramatic
By N. Kline
I wanted to like this book and these characters, but after the first 400 pages, the constant drama became exhausting and ultimately, ennervating. It was impossible not to feel impatient for the end. The author risks losing her audience's sympathy with such excessive length; she certainly lost mine.

It's clear the author first wrote the book for an online readership who probably encouraged this serialized format--but what works in one venue doesn't necessarily work in another. Whatever editing did happen was seriously inadequate. This is easily twice as long as it should have been.

It's a real shame to lose sympathy for a trans character, but Min's constant, adolescent whingeing combined with over-the-top self-pity, plus her complete inability to take responsibility for her life finally just drove me up the wall. She's supposedly great at work... but all we see is screw-ups and her cringeing while her abusive boss screams at her. She's a borderline alcoholic; she's a borderline anorexic. There's never any mention of these things as related to her intense bodily dysphoria and self-loathing (which is also exhausting: this character apparently has never heard of androgynous clothing; many women--some of them straight--hate stockings and ultra-femme wear too). If the character won't stand up for herself... why should we? We hear about the much-demonized Korean ultra-conservative mom; she barely has her own voice. We hear about how Min was bullied every day at school, but not until about page 550, at which point it's too little, too late. Meanwhile Min keeps stringing her saintly boyfriend along--I felt way more sympathy for him.

The book was probably written sequentially with few substantial changes after the initial draft, and it shows: key details in Min's life could have been better positioned earlier on. This would also have given us some relief from her endless self-castigation (the average number of italicized words per paragraph is four). This much first-person from the most entertaining character in the world would be exhausting; from such a self-hating character it is simply too great an imposition on the audience. Min is financially well-off, spectacularly talented, beautiful/handsome; and has resources most trans folk could only dream of. But all she does is whine and have increasingly serious drinking bouts while she resents having to wear a dress (so: don't); resents having to "choose" a gender (so: don't), and so on.

Is Min trans--and how trans is trans?--are questions neither the book nor the character seems to ask. A whole world of options is available out there. But this character never thinks to look them up or inform herself. We have to wait until approximately page 690 (no exaggeration) before someone else says: andro. The last thing I want is to question how a character identifies when that is to large extent the point of the story. But it feels like despite almost 800 pages... even the most basic self-questioning barely happens. And it all happens in the last fifty pages. In no particular order. I understand this is because the character is afraid, but the author is responsible for presenting a wider perspective especially on such an important issue. That doesn't even begin to happen till the end. It's just too little too late.

The love-interest, Bree--a physically tiny DD-blondie--was even more irritating than Min--at first. She's real anime caricature, and a slightly creepy one at that, given the age difference and the catholic-school getups. Then she grew on me... in part because she was not Min. A friend suggested this pair was like Justin and Brian in QAF; the younger character, Justin, was by far the more mature of the pair, and that's true here, too. The difference is that Bree is a Mary Sue; she's completely implausible. She barely even makes sense as a human physically. Justin's mistakes at least felt emotionally realistic, even when the plot got silly. (All Min's friends are saints, because they are all perfectly evolved and accepting.) But at least Bree stands on her own two feet and fights for herself and others.

The idea here was good: carry us through the first baby-steps of a character realizing something must change; a character who ultimately perhaps winds up identifying as trans, but in any event, as something different/other than how she sees herself at first. But this character is completely either/or. Either ultra-femme or not a woman. Either girl-clothes or boy clothes. Either he or she. This weird extremism is never addressed but it's the underpinning of all the things in this story that make very little sense. First her relationship with Bree reads as closeted/lesbian. Then it's straight; and since Min hates her body she must need a d*ck to be with Bree (as opposed to any one of scores of other options which never come up. Maybe she's a drag king. Maybe she's bi. Maybe she's a stone butch. Maybe she's a he but doesn't decide on surgery. Maybe she's a he and does decide on surgery, or partial surgery). The variety of options are almost endless, but Min is so trapped that we get trapped with her. It just feels like the material got away from the author.

Read this book!
By Laurel
I read this book while it was in serial format, and I fell in love. It's well written, entertaining to read, the characters will both endear themselves to you and frustrate you at other times, you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you might even discover something new about yourself.

Even if you personally don't struggle with sexuality and/or gender issues, the overall theme of discovering your real self and being true to yourself are so important and relevant to everyone; and not just in terms of sexuality/gender, but also in the many different aspects of our lives.

Please read and support this talented author so she can grace us with even more wonderful and powerful literature.
