Stephen Houlgate is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Warwick. He is the author of Hegel, Nietzsche and the Criticism of Metaphysics (1986), An Introduction to Hegel: Freedom, Truth and History (1991, 2005) and The Opening of Hegel’s Logic: From Being to Infinity (2006), and his edited volumes include Hegel and the Philosophy of Nature (1998), The Hegel Reader (1998), and G.W.F. Hegel: Outlines of the Philosophy of Right (2008). He has served as Vice President and President of the Hegel Society of America and is a former editor of the Bulletin of the Hegel Society of Great Britain . Michael Baur is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Fordham University in New York City, and Adjunct Professor of Law at Fordham Law School. He is Secretary of the Hegel Society of America and has published widely on phenomenology, critical theory, philosophy of law, and nineteenth–century continental philosophy, and on thinkers including Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Aristotle, and Aquinas.

well-done; latest research; nice volume

Obviously, I'm not giving a cover to cover review of this huge volume. I'll add to the review as I go through it. First essay I read:
Hegel's philosophy of language - by Surber - 20 large pages:
Surber gives a good articulation of representative language but is wrong in concluding that this comprises the entire philosophy of language. He does not present the triad of REPRESENTATIVE LANGUAGE; CONCEPTUAL LANGUAGE; AND LANGUAGE OF THE CONCEPT. Therefore he misses the mark. But it is a good presentation of representative language.
2nd essay by Bernasconi on "the ruling categories": 17 pages. Emphasized the concepts of the ontological trinity that govern history. Good overall article, but not a lot of specific content. Content was fairly general and reader is supposed to fill in the blank spaces. More elaboration could have been given on the negative concepts also. "good", rating for this one.
3rd essay by posch: "hegel and the sciences". 20 pages. Posch presents Hegel's philosophy of nature in outline form, consisting of five triads. It gives you a good thought-picture and doesn't bore you to death. This is the least significant part of Hegel's system; until someone can logically jump from chemism to subjectivity. "Excellent" rating for a tough "dry" topic.
4th essay by ferrini: "transition to organics" 20 pages . Hegel's philosophy of nature consists of six triads. Posch gave us the first five. Ferrini gives us triad number six consisting of: (1) light; (2) material components; & (3) teleolological chemical bodies. He presents the material concisely in outline form, with just enough clarification. The end result is the first appearance of subjectivity. Posch and ferrini combine to present an excellent discussion of Hegel's take on nature. These two essays deserve an "excellent" rating.
I combined surber and bernasconi for a philosophy of language and I combined posch and ferrini for a philosophy of nature. And these are 2011 presentations when America has grown-up in Hegel scholarship.
Right now I'm strongly recommending this volume. And the manufacturer produced it in a higher quality than what you normally see
I've just finished two additional essays: Williams and Hodgson on the philosophy of religion:
both authors picked up on the significant but usually overlooked concept of "counter-blow". Two triads are presented: cosmological proof; teleological proof; and ontological proof make up first triad. Second triad: social infinite; true infinite; and actual infinite. Hodgson also interjects a nice addition in noting that "notion" constitutes "telos" within hegel's system. We knew this to be true; but finally someone said it.
the finer points of mature scholarship make this volume the best available today. Seeing the "little things" caught and articulated makes this book a proud possession. I would value this book at $200.00 so if you can get it for less; go for it.
Final review comments: I just finished Neuhaser on society and it was excellent. These articles consolidate so much information; it's amazing. He presents two triads; one for subjectivity and one for objectivity. New ideas are introduced so it becomes valuable for the well-versed also.
This book is a "must have" period; well worth what I paid for it.
