great source for bible groups

This book offers fascinating insight into the historical background to the period that the gospels were written. While it does not give the latest research on the background to the actual writing of the texts it does give excellent suggestions and is helpful for group discussion. If you are looking for a simple reading, this is not your book but if you are looking for a 'feel' for the time of the gospels, this is excellent.

Understanding how to choose the best study Bible for you

I must begin with an explanation of the two different schools of thought mirrored in EVERY study Bible. This is critical to choosing a study Bible that agrees with YOUR personal theology. This is almost never explained to prospective readers.
Study Bibles fall into two basic categories: liberal and conservative. The liberal school believes the Bible was “God’s word” as written and understood by men. Thus it is open to interpretation.
Conservatives believe God is the author and it was penned by “scribes.” As a conservative, I can’t believe an all powerful God, creator of the universe would not write His OWN book to His children – you and me.
Does it makes sense that a God for who we lay down our very life in His service, that He would trust men to NEVER make a mistake in interpreting His intent? Believe that and you have to buy one of my tickets on the next Mars shuttle. Only one left. How about it?
That said “The Word in Life Study Bible” is conservative and it is one of the best choices of the conservative study Bibles. I won’t go into its details; they are covered elsewhere.
There is one important point not covered and that is, “What are really the main differences in the two schools?
They are important.” It is important if you want the fullness of God as promised by Jesus in John 14. Jesus promised we would receive the comforter (the Holy Spirit). Jesus received the Holy Spirit, described in John 1:28-34. It follows that Jesus performed His miracles with the power of the Holy Spirit and that is mirrored in John 14 when we are promised the power to do Jesus’ works. Liberals deny this interpretation.
Don't misunderstand; Jesus is God and all powerful but here He was man and capable of dying for us. In heaven, we don't die, do we? Does it make sense that God's laws apply differently here and in heaven? Jesus received the Holy Spirit for a reason; otherwise why does the Bible make a point of it? God is logical. He has a reason for everything. God structured our whole world on order and logiic - right down to how atoms function and are the building blocks for everything - everything..
Further, in the interpretation of Genesis 1:26-27, liberals deny, exclude or offer alternate versions of the implied Trinity. This is key to watering down the importance of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit’s role in a Christian’s life is removed, it destroys our power. And that was Jesus’ key to winning the lost.
In Africa today, many thousands are coming to Jesus by way of Reinhard Bonnke. He is a man of God who uses the promised power of the Holy Spirit to win the lost, just as Jesus promised. So don’t tell me I’m wrong.
The Bible is a complex book with many messages about life and God. Think about what is important to your Christian life and how you want to grow closer to Him. Then decide what is a good choice for your personal study Bible,
A study Bible helps understand difficult or hidden meanings. It should not be a substitute for your own understanding. Go with God.

A Good Entry-Level Study Bible

I received this 2455 page study Bible as a gift after I was baptized at the age of 22. This Bible was a wonderful gift and has played a major role in my life. It was the first Bible that I truly read and the first Bible I read from cover to cover. I intend to give it to my children one day. Several years ago my go-to study Bible became the NIV Life Application Study Bible, and a few years ago I shifted to the ESV Study Bible so I do not use the Word in Life Study Bible like I once did. Nevertheless, it still comes in handy from time to time, and I am extremely grateful to own study Bibles in multiple translations. If you choose to purchase this Bible, some of the features you will find include...
1. Introductory articles at the beginning of each Bible book
2. Personality profiles that give summaries of various individuals
3. Small maps with supplementary information
4. Articles explaining Scriptural passages and asking us to consider how the passage applies to our lives
