About the Author
Jean Casella is a co-director of Solitary Watch, a web-based watchdog project, and a Soros Justice Fellow. She is the editor of two previous anthologies and lives in Brooklyn, New York. James Ridgeway has been an investigative journalist for more than fifty years and is the author of seventeen previous books. He is a co-director of Solitary Watch and a Soros Justice Fellow. He lives in Washington, D.C. Sarah Shourd, a journalist and playwright, was held as a political hostage by the Iranian government, including 410 days in solitary, an experience she chronicled in A Sliver of Light: Three Americans Imprisoned in Iran. She lives in Oakland, California.

Extremely well written descriptions of life in solitary, mostly first person accounts by those confined in these hellholes

Your world has shrunk to a small airless room, 4 1/2 X 9 feet--narrow enough that you can't stretch your arms side to side without hitting the wall, long enough to lie down, with an extra foot to spare beyond the bed. You share your room with a bed, a combination toilet/sink, and a small box which holds everything you own. You are alone. Profoundly, totally alone. No one talks to you. No one listens to you. No one hears you. As hours stretch to days, weeks, months, years, and decades alone, you slowly lose your mind.
This is solitary confinement. The US is the world leader in the use of solitary. On any given day, our prisons, jails and detention center's hold approximately (no one actually counts) 100,000 people in these profoundly dehumanizing cages. Under international standards, keeping someone in solitary for more than 15 days is considered torture, as it causes permanent damage to people's minds. Yet the US routinely keeps people in solitary not for 15 days, or even 15 weeks, but for 15 years, and much longer.
Hell Is a Very Small Place is the best book I have read (and I have read many) in describing the impact solitary has on the human beings who endure this torture. From the opening sentence written by Sarah Shourd (one of the book's editors), describing her own descent into madness (thankfully temporary) while being held in solitary in Iran, to the afterward by Juan Mendez, who was kidnapped and tortured by the Argentinian government for his work as a lawyer defending victims of human rights violations--and went on to be the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, this book is equal parts heart wrenching and infuriating.
Dostoyevsky famously wrote that the degree of civilization of a society is best measured by the way it treats its prisoners. We have failed this test miserably.

Must Read!!

I originally purchased this book because my brother's essay is in it. I have since purchased it for many family members, because I feel it's something everyone should read. It's important to know what's going on in our prison systems.
This book brought up so many emotions in me. I think this should be a must read for Criminal Justice majors. We should all fight for justice. This treatment is inhumane. How is it that in the 21st century this is still taking place. I cannot wrap my head around it. Grab the tissues when reading this book. It's well worth it though.

These authors deserve a Nobel Prize

Editors Casella and Ridgeway should get a Nobel prize for their long, harrowing battle to alert us and the world to the huge dirty secret of our prison system. Their book gives voices to human souls literally buried alive by a merciless system with no due process, no oversight, and no accountability. As their experts point out over and over, the supreme cruelty of solitary confinement serves no purpose save to satisfy the rampant sadism the system inspires in its guards, while its survivors re-enter society too damaged to function. Read it and weep. Then get mad. Then for god's sake DO something!
This book should be required reading for every judge and jury before sending anyone to prison.
