A Superb Book On Analytical Dynamics

This is an excellent book on the fundamentals of Analytical Dynamics. It deals with the essentials of Lagrangian mechanics in an altogether new and imaginative way. It is a 'must read' for beginners as well as experts, for it contains a wealth of new information and new results. Though short (only about 250 pages), it sparkles with brilliance and promises to become, like Goldstein's book, a classic text in the field.
Far from a dry re-hash of material taken from other books, as is commonly the case with books on this subject, this book takes a truly novel and exciting tack--just like its title says. It explains the basic concepts in Analytical Dynamics in a new, thorough, yet simple, way. The material is extremely well-crafted and carefully presented in a systematic manner; the power of the new results provided by the authors is astounding, as illustrated by the numerous examples in the book.
The authors show their mastery of the subject by leading the reader on, with unusual clarity, into deeper and deeper realms of the subject with each successive chapter. The book provides amazing insights into Lagrangian mechanics, constrained motion, multi-body dynamics, Gauss's Principle, etc., along with an incredible economy of words, and a stunning level of simplicity.
The material in especially the later chapters that deals with elimination methods and the Gibbs-Appell equations, to the best of my knowledge, is all new. The problems at the end of each chapter appear to be carefully chosen and instructive for students. Each chaper ends with a section entitled "For Further Reading," that I found interesting. The format of the book is such that it could be easily used as a text for a course on the subject.
The authors have written a truly outstanding text that can be read and enjoyed by an advanced university junior or senior, a graduate student, or an expert in the field. It is one of the VERY FEW technical books that I have come across that I just could not put down, once I started reading it.
I heartily recommend this book to the science and engineering community.

A Short Review

I came across this book surfing the web. The customer reviews seemed excellent, so I bought it. Since I don't like long book reviews, I'll be brief.
My Opinion: The book is EXCELLENT! The authors know analytical dynamics inside-out, and that is why their explanations are so simple and aesthetic.
My Research: I was curious to know how this book came about . . . it seemed to come like out of the blue. So I did some research. The authors are active researchers. They have published numerous papers in the most prestigious journals over the last 2 decades, and they continue to present new research on the fundamentals of analytical dynamics. That explained a lot to me! Especially the high quality of the book.
Recommendation: Read it, and enjoy! Read it again, and enjoy some more!
About other reviews: I agree with the previous reviewers . . . this is a book that should be on the bookshelf of everyone interested in mechanics, students and researchers alike.

A New Classic in Analytical Dynamics

This short book is written with a style and clarity that can only come from individuals who understand analytical dynamics both deeply and well. The book is in many ways utterly brilliant. The authors take on perhaps the most difficult problem in analytical dynamics-- the problem of constrained motion that has been worked on by such individuals as H. Poincare-- and they provide a solution that is new, elegant, simple, and marvelous.
Though it starts from simple beginnings, from the very first chapter one realizes that this is a book of a very different caliber from those currently available on the subject. Almost imperceptibly, the authors lead the reader across a vast landscape in analytical dynamics. The topics are covered incrementally, and in excellent pedagogical order. Problems at the end of each chapter are well thought out. The authors' style is engaging, their explanations are remarkably clear, and their results simply amazing. The physical insights they provide are beautiful, novel, and new.
I consider this book to be a truly original contribution to the field of analytical dynamics; for, there is little in it that I have ever come across in any other book on the subject. Not only is its approach new, as its title says, but most of the results developed in it are also new-- something I would never have imagined finding in a mature field like mechanics.
There is little doubt that this book will have a lasting impact on the field of analytical dynamics. In eight short chapters it says more about the fundamentals of analytical dynamics than most other books that are three times its size. I believe that its uniqueness may well, in time, make it a classic.
I very strongly recommend this book to all students and researchers in the field. I plan to use it as a text for the course that I teach on the subject.

Mark Christiansen has created visual effects and animations for feature films, television, computer games, and on behalf of an array of high technology companies. His recent feature film credits for the animation and special effects studio The Orphanage include The Day After Tomorrow and films by Robert Rodriguez; he has also created graphics for documentaries produced by HBO and the History Channel. His studio, Christiansen Creative (www.christiansen.com), produces effects, motion graphics, and writing. His independent directing and design work has been featured at film festivals including the LA Short Film Festival in 2004.

Named the number-one beta tester for After Effects 6.0 by the After Effects development team, Mark has written and lectured about After Effects extensively. He is a co-author of After Effects 5.5 Magic with Nathan Moody, a contributing editor for DV Magazine, and wrote the previous edition of this book, as well as tutorials and other materials directly for Adobe in support of After Effects 7.0. Excellent!

Projects, insights and operation of AE 7.0 in ABUNDANCE! I would swear by any Adobe publication if you want to go deeper into the program, save time and establish an intelligence about work flow. I just wish that Adobe would provide a FLASH PLUG-IN that is universal and doesn't require updating. Aside from that on my wish list, Adobe is tops and has provided me with a knowledgeable source for my professional work. All the Classroom publications are great as well.

Excellent reading for more advanced users

Finally, a book for those of us who are already familiar or even very capable with After Effects but still want to push our knowledge even further. If you fall into this category, at the very least you will learn many new highly valuable tips and tricks and will gain a better understanding of After Effects' inner workings. For those of you who are less familiar with After Effects, fret not. The writing style in this book assumes some prior knowledge but even neophytes will find it entertaining, easy to understand and not so brisk as to leave you hanging. You will be able to follow along with even a cursory understanding of After Effects, and little to no prior experience in compositing or visual effects. It's really that good. And in case you're wondering, Mark, Stu and the whole Orphanage crew are the nicest bunch of artists in the industry, and are some of the brightest stars out there. If you're like me and are sick of buying $50 books written by people who don't even seem to understand the subject matter they are "teaching," this book will be a breath of fresh air. From page one you know you are learning from some of the best.

Studio Techniques primarily focuses on using After Effects for the creation of feature film/television special effects such as compositing of green screen footage, integrating 3D elements with live action etc. While similar material might be out there, make no mistake - none of it addresses it from the standpoint of the industry professional quite like this book does. The techniques and requirements of feature film & television projects are a completely different beast, and this book will prepare you for dealing with those real world challenges like no material I have found to date. Every pixel of your work will be examined and scrutinized in dailies, and this book goes deep into the techniques necessary to produce polished, amazing results.

Unlike many books out there, it doesn't just give you a taste of one subject and then move on before you understand the topic at hand. The authors really made sure that this book was comprehensive and effective, sometimes reiterating points too many times just to ensure that you are establishing good workflow practices and that you understand the key points. This aspect of production work can't be emphasized enough, and oddly most material out there glosses over this most important part of VFX work. I have seen many good artists passed over because their organizational and workflow skills were so chaotic that they were more trouble than their artistic abilities could compensate for.

If you are even remotely interested in using After Effects for SpecialFX and compositing work, this is without a doubt the first book to buy. I highly recommend it.

Adobe has released CS5 by now".In my opinion (being a self taught technical guru all my life),its important to learn the basics Mechanisim of any software.If you learn and Dominate the earlier version of any software,chances are you will be a total expert when it comes to dealing with all its future upgrades.
Put it this way.Software is a language.If you truly master one language,you can master them all.

Information-laden. Comes with great art too.

[[VIDEOID:mo1VL6P855XI245]]EVE: Source is a nice book that fills in the backstory of the Eve Online. Old-timers will probably get the most out of this information-laden guide to the sci-fi universe.

The book doesn't talk about the game, but it covers the lore, about 10 years worth since the game was released in 2003.

The content is grouped into the different existing factions, with a little introduction to New Eden. Each faction is presented with history, politics, traits and people. It's pretty much a world-building kind of book. What we have here is a tightly woven sci-fi lore collection.

It's a large 200-page hardcover. I've read other reviews commenting on the book's spine. It uses perfect binding, stitched and glued. Mine looks alright so far.

Oh, there are many beautiful sci-fi art included. Spaceships, worlds, glamour shots of the factions. Very detailed and high quality artworks.

Recommended to all EVE players.

Good Summary of a SciFi universe

The book is filled with information about the universe of Eve Online. Part history book and part almanac it holds much more information then I would have guessed for the price. Each empire also has a short story that provides some nice background.

EVE: Source doesn't talk about the game itself at all, so I would recommend it as a standalone book for someone who is interested in Sci-fi world building.

DONT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION

it would be lower if I could. information may be wonderful, and the pictures are good, but the kindle edition is an utter piece of slapped together trash. it isn't text. it is all an image, so no resizing the abysmally small text. Unless you have a coffee table book sized tablet it is not worth it. I have never been more disappointed in a $16.00 purchase.

Comprehensive and Worth Finding

Bill Foley's seminal work proved very helpful for me. One could not ask for a more complete text on building a custom electric. I got into guitars and found that the beauty of the construction was something that I had to learn more about. This book gives instructions on how to assemble your own custom axe from popular manufacturers' assembly-ready guitar parts. And even if you aren't going to make your own, buy this one to learn all about how the different parts work, from standard pickups to humbuckers, from tremolo and tonal controls to passive, noiseless pickups. The advice he gives also helped me choose specific components for my guitar, and then told me how to put it all together. Although it is out of print, try to order it through Amazon's Out-of-Print service, which has helped me in the past. A must for a guitar lover.

A useful book for beginners

This is an interesting book for complete beginners. The instructions show the reader how to assemble a custom made guitar from popular manufacturers parts. There are no photos, only drawings. The wiring diagrams appear to be quite useful. When used in conjunction with a proper parts catalogue like Stewart-Macdonald's, it would appear that the reader should be able to construct his or her own custom built electric guitar.

Great book for building a guitar from available parts

I got a copy of this book back in the mid 80's just as the Floyd Rose tremolo was gaining acceptance and the build it yourself ethos was coming to the forefront. In the early to mid 80's you were hard pressed to find an off the shelf guitar that fit your specific needs. Your only alternative was to pay large amounts of money for a custom made guitar from Jackson, Torres, Schecter or the like or build it yourself.

With Parts purchased from various sources and this book, I was able to assemble, adjust, and prep the guitar to get the playability and sound I was after. To this date it has served as a great reference in maintenance, adjustment, and guide for modification for me.

The book is well written and easy to understand. It is well laid out and provides the right information to adjust & install bridge assemblies, adjust necks properly, and how to finish and dress frets.

To this day some 30 years later the guitar I built using this guide by Bill Foley, still surpasses the setups and factory prep that my other guitars have.

If you get a chance to get this out of print book to help you with building and/or setting up your guitar, try to get a copy.

Classic work from a Master

I.N. Muskhelishvili (with Kolosov and numerous colleagues, many of them in Tbilisi) developed and set the subject of complex variable methods applied to planar elastic problems on a firm mathematical footing in the early half of the 20th century. This excellent, authoritative and comprehensive work is organized as follows-

(1) Part I, chapters 1-3, pp 1-84 : Introduces stress, strain and the concept of the generalized Hooke's law for elasticity. This is fairly standard material, except that the more familiar Einstein summation convention is not used.

(2) Part II, chapters 4-7, pp 85-189: In chapter 4, planar approximations (plane stress and plane strain) are introduced. Chapter 5 introduces the concept of complex stress functions and the way they can be used to solve the bi-harmonic equation of planar elasticity. The strength of INM's work is its generality: multiply connected and infinite domains are also considered. The latter part of the chapter deals with questions of uniqueness and regularity of solutions. Chapter 6 is a brief but excellent introduction to the meaning of multi-valued displacements and elastic dislocations. Chapter 7 introduces the conformal transform for the Kolosov-Muskhelishvili equations.

(3) Part III, chapters 8-11, pp 190-256: Chapter 8 introduces the complex fourier series. Chapter 9 uses this technique to solve the first and second boundary value problems (specified traction and specified displacement respectively) for a disk and its complementary region (infinite plane with a hole). After solving the problems in generality, special cases where the potential functions have only a finite number of terms in expansion are considered. Chapter 10 tackles the ring in a similar way. Chapter 11 demonstrates elementary applications of conformal mapping.

(4) Part IV, chapters 12-13, pp 257-306: These two chapters provide a quick introduction to Cauchy integrals and boundary values of complex functions. Entire texts have been written on the subject, but the material contained here is adequate for the rest of this work.

(5) Part V, chapters 14-17, pp. 307-434: In this part, the reader will begin to appreciate the power of the complex variable approach. The organization is similar to Part III, i.e. problems are solved in great generality first and specific examples of interest considered subsequently. In the examples one may find such classic problems as the stretching of an infinite plate with an elliptic hole in addition to less common ones such as an arbitrary number of concentrated forces acting at interior points of a disk. The problem of an elliptic inclusion is also considered. Chapter 16 tackles half-plane problems and also the (rarer) case of a general semi-infinite region. Chapter 17 briefly considers numerous generalizations (multiply connected regions, mixed boundary value problems)

(6) Part VI, chapters 18-20, pp. 435-563: Chapter 18 introduces the Riemann Boundary Value Problem (called the 'Hilbert Problem' by INM) for finding a sectionally holomorphic function that satisfies a given 'jump' at the boundary. This elegant and powerful theory is then applied to solve numerous important problems for the half-plane (chapter 19). In the examples, the reader will encounter classic mixed boundary-value problems e.g. contact of a punch and a half-plane and crack-problems (infinite plane with straight cuts). Chapter 20 applies the BVP technique to regions with a circular boundary. Chapter 21 extends this to the case where the region of interest maps conformally to a circle.

(7) Part VII, chapters 22-25, pp. 564-661: This is a quite distinct part of the book and it considers torsion and bending of bars, both homogeneous and compound. The classic St. Venant problem is considered and the examples are at least mathematically fascinating (torsion of a Booth's lemniscate sectioned rod?)

(8) 3 useful appendices and numerous references. Unfortunately, many of the historic works referred here (by Magnaradze, Savin, Sherman, Shtaerman, Vekua) are in 30s-50s era Soviet journals and not available in translation.

The book was translated by Prof. J.R.M Radok (himself an elastician of repute) and the translation is generally excellent with very few errors.

It is unfortunate is that this beautiful work is being sold at an exorbitant price (> $200). This makes it prohibitively expensive for graduate students. One hopes that Kluwer academic will consider the value of this text and the importance of its wide availability and lower the price.

A masterpiece

For those who are involved in any way with the mathematical theory of 2-D elasticity, this book is really a must have. Though the first edition goes back to 1949 (English edition by Noordhoff Ltd in 1953), it still contains everything that is known in this field. It actually employs the theory of holomorphic functions, Cauchy integrals and conformal mapping in order to solve the various boundary value problems met in plane elasticity. It is almost self contained as far as it concerns its mathematical background. Its results can be used to treat numerous applications of practical interst, such as cracks, inclusions, holes, contact problems, etc. Its a pitty it is out of print (or in print-on-demand only). It can be used along with the same author's "Singular Integral Equations" (another masterpiece on the subject) and Gakhov's:"Boundary Value Problems". Basic knowledge of complex analysis is a prerequisite. It covers 700 pages, contents are: 1. Analysis of stress 2. Analysis of strain 3. Basic Equations 4. Basic eqns of the plane theory of elasticity 5. Stress function-Complex representation 6.Multi-valued displacements. Thermal stresses 7. In a formidable critique of Freud's theories and modern psychoanalytic practice, English journalist Webster argues that Freud's mentor, French neurologist Jean Charcot, misdiagnosed as traumatic hysteria what were actually cases of injury-related brain damage and epilepsy. Misled by this error, Freud, in Webster's opinion, himself misdiagnosed many of his early cases, seeking to explain physical ailments or illnesses with recourse to patients' childhood emotional traumas. To Webster, psychoanalysis, for all its rationalism and professed secularism, is a "crypto-theological system," a modernized reworking of traditional Judeo-Christian morality, sexual realism and restraint. He portrays Freud as the founder of a messianic movement that placed at its core a confessional ritual: the therapy session. Freud's hero-worship of crackpot Berlin physician Wilhelm Fliess, his demonizing of dissidents such as Alfred Adler and Carl Jung, his inflating of successful therapeutic results and his overbearing, aggressive, even prosecutorial attitude toward his patients come under scrutiny. Yet, though Webster calls psychoanalysis a pseudoscience, he contends that it nevertheless has yielded productive insights about human nature and society because of its internal logic, sophistication and emotional nuance.

Journalist Webster explores the thesis that Freud misdiagnosed his early hysteria patients?essentially founding psychoanalysis on a false premise. Moreover, he likens the psychoanalytic movement to a religious cult, with Freud, the messianic figure, rigidly controlling its development. And, using Freud as examplar, Webster reveals what he considers to be a cryptic Judeo-Christian ethos embedded in the foundations of the scientific world view. The author doesn't address an essential point, however: at its inception, psychoanalysis did add a critical dimension to a growing theory of human behavior and spirituality, which included Darwin's work and continued with Jung's. Still, Webster's readable book presents an effective argument, rivaling Henri Ellenberger's The Discovery of the Unconscious (Basic Bks., 1970). Recommended for larger collections.?Dennis G. This powerful, incisive rendering of Freud as a pseudo-scientist with a compulsive need for fame is supported by extensive research. Evidence indicates that Freud began his career by publishing a paper on cocaine therapy that presented conclusions he knew to be false and dangerously misleading; that his almost invariable diagnoses of hysteria for an endless assortment of complaints, readily diagnosed today as symptoms of organic disease or trauma, had no scientific validity; and that he could concoct sexual signification, no matter how whimsical, for any symptom or dream. Patients who rejected such sexual fabrications were "in denial," thus anticipating contemporary allegations. Webster notes the resemblances of psychoanalytic doctrine to religious beliefs in original sin and confession, and he likens Freud and his disciples to a messianic cult wherein heterodoxy was not tolerated; heretics, such as Adler and Jung, were expelled and ruthlessly attacked. Freudian myths

Among Webster's many scholarly achievements in this meticulous and devastating examination of Freud's life and work, he exposes the extraordinary number of myths about Freud which abounded in the twentieth century. A minor one is that Einstein was a great admirer of Freud. This is erroneous. In a letter to one of his sons in the early 1930s Einstein wrote that he was unconverted by Freud's writings and believed his methods dubious - even fraudulent (cited in *The Private Lives of Albert Einstein*, by Roger Highfield and Paul Carter, p. 233).

Freudian slips

Richard Webster exposes Sigmund Freud as a charlatan, the inventor of a pseudo-science that falsely claims to explain the human psyche and restore it to health. Freud's theories are not derived from empirical data, or even from Freud's clinical experience. Nor are they original with Freud, but are instead lifted, without attribution, from the general cultural ambiance, or from crackpots like Wilhelm Fleiss, who "cured" mental illness by cauterizing spots inside the nose. Webster builds on the writings of Frederick Crews ("Skeptical Engagements"), Adolf Grunbaum ("The Foundations of Psychoanalysis") and many others - to produce this devastating portrait of a man of titanic ambition and few scruples. At the height of his undeserved fame, Freud boasted that he was another Copernicus; but history is more likely to remember him as another L. Ron Hubbard.

Freud's theory of repression - "the very cornerstone of psychoanalysis" - is typically ill-founded and fanciful: Neurotic symptoms, says Freud, are generated by repressed memories of a "traumatic" sexual experience. Therapy locates the trauma and makes it conscious. Pent-up emotion is released. Presto!! - the symptoms disappear! So much for the hype. In reality, Freud doesn't derive his theory from the "confessions" of his patients, but from a clinical method that is self-confirming. Traumatic experiences are assumed and patients browbeaten until they agree with the therapist's assumptions. As for the alleged remedial powers of the Freudian method: Beginning with Anna O., whose case launched Freud's career as a faith-healer, cures have been claimed but never proven. After therapy, Anna wound up in a hospital displaying all the same symptoms she had to begin with. The placebo effect readily accounts for anyone who feels better after therapy. No, psychoanalysis is effective for one purpose only: extracting money from gullible neurotics.

It is remarkable that this rather shoddy confidence trick lasted as long as it did. But on this planet, credulity has never been in short supply.

Ryle wouldn't be proud

Well over six hundred pages long, and boasting an extensive bibliography, Why Freud Was Wrong is a book that might look impressive at first glance. Webster undoubtedly put much effort into researching it, and his list of sources at least is helpful. It is dreadful, however, and it's only because of minor redeeming aspects such as its usefulness as a guide to other recent criticisms of Freud that I give it two stars rather than only one.

Much of Why Freud Was Wrong is given over to a preposterous and unscholarly argument that pretends to show that Freud is a "Judaeo-Christian" thinker, and that psychoanalysis is really a disguised version of "Judaeo-Christian" belief; it would be a wasted effort to show why his interpretation is mistaken, and the less said about it the better. It's more interesting, for what it reveals about Webster's style of argument, to examine his attempt to discredit Freud's concept of the unconscious. Strangely enough, one of his key sources here is Gilbert Ryle, a philosopher who, as he does not tell us, happened to have a rather positive view of Freud and psychoanalysis. Webster thinks highly of Ryle's The Concept of Mind, but glosses over the fact that it calls Freud "psychology's one man of genius" and seems to endorse the concept of the unconscious.

Webster seems to consider his own work the next best thing after Ryle, but he appears to have used Ryle mainly as a model for his prose style; all too obviously he put more effort into trying to write like Ryle than he did into thinking through the problems involved with "the unconscious" as a concept. If you compare one of Ryle's sentences from The Concept of Mind ("A pain in my knee is a sensation that I mind having; so 'unnoticed pain' is an absurd expression, where 'unnoticed sensation' has no absurdity") to one of Webster's key assertions in his argument against the unconscious ("A memory is something you have remembered and it defies logic to characterise as a memory something whose salient characteristic is that it has actually been forgotten"), you will see just how closely Webster imitates Ryle's prose.

Viewed as a logical argument, Webster's attempt to show that "unconscious memories" are a contradiction in terms (and thereby show that there's no such thing as the unconscious) is ridiculous. Words do not have fixed meanings, and the meaning of the word "memory" has no relevance to whether what have been called "unconscious memories" actually exist or not. Even if one were to suppose (absurdly) that the word "memory" must have a single meaning set in stone for all time, and that this meaning must be the one Webster insists on, all this would show is that "unconscious memories" need to be called something else; it certainly wouldn't demonstrate that they don't exist, as he goes on to imply.

Stuart Hampshire once perceptively noted of Ryle's work that, "There are many passages in which the argument simply consists of a succession of epigrams, which do indeed effectively explode on impact, shattering conventional trains of thought, but which, like most epigrams, leave behind among the debris in the reader's mind a trail of timid doubts and qualifications." Webster tries to argue in the same epigrammatic way as Ryle, but with disastrous results, since too many of his arguments (like those against the unconscious) do not withstand minimal critical examination. Their flimsiness is one of several telling signs that despite his references to philosophy, Webster has little grounding in the subject.

He makes no reference to Jean-Paul Sartre's Being and Nothingness, another classic book from the 1940s and one which, unlike The Concept of Mind, actually does criticize Freud and attempt to discredit the unconscious. One could be forgiven for thinking that Webster doesn't mention Sartre's critique of Freud because, were he were to acknowledge it, he would be forced to admit that the Freudian unconscious has already received a thorough philosophical critique, making his efforts quite unnecessary and beside the point (Sartre is implausibly dismissed in the introduction as another "Judaeo-Christian" thinker like Freud, despite his being strongly opposed to Freud in most ways). It's not only classics that are ignored; Webster also ignores recent work by John Searle that is directly relevant to the issues he is concerned with. Searle gave a much more careful and thoughtful critique of the Freudian unconscious in The Rediscovery of the Mind (1992).

One book that does seem to have influenced Webster's thinking, although he does not mention it, is David Stannard's Shrinking History: On Freud and the Failure of Psychohistory (1980). Like Webster's later book, Stannard's tries to base its arguments on Ryle, ignores the fact that Ryle actually endorsed the unconscious, and makes no reference to Sartre. This unusual combination of features would suggest that Webster has used Stannard as a source without acknowledgement. One only wonders why Webster bothers to write a book against Freud when he can claim that Freudian notions run counter to "our own experience and any intuitive assessment of the mental life and character of small children." If that were true (which it is not, since different people have different experiences and intuitive assessments of things), his book and many another like it would never have had to be written, since we'd all know that Freud was wrong and wouldn't need him to tell us so.
