Adapted perfectly for your teenager

"Wild Grace" is fantastic adaptation of Max Lucado's book "Grace" for teens by James Lund. It takes all the basic points and text from Max's book and accommodates it completely for a teen's reading and comprehension level without being too simplex. There are fascinating story examples in addition to question prompts throughout the book for a teen to journal their own story from previously discussed topics. The story examples and length of the book will make it enticing for a teenager to read, and the subject of grace is presented effectively. I highly recommend it for your teenager!

Wild Grace

"Wild Grace" What Happens When Grace Happens by Max Lucado and adapted for youth by James Lund is a great read.
This book goes step by step through the process of accepting, accessing, and applying God's grace in our life. It is well documented with scripture and packed with appropriate illustrations.
I've not read - yet - the original work by Lucado, but even though this book has been adapted by James Lund, it still reads as easily as a Lucado work.
He addresses the need for grace in our life - no matter how good we might think we are, as well as the abundance of grace for us - no matter how bad we might think we have been. The illustrations will help drive the truths contained in the book home no matter the age of the reader; however, I think the teen reader will see the application more clearly through the use of the many stories used to help make the point.
I would recommend this study as a part of any women's group. It is written so one does not have to be an experienced group leader to make effective use of it.

This would make a great gift for any teen!

There have been times in my life when I don't know how I managed to get through certain trials and remain intact. Surely by now I should be damaged and hopeless, should have given in to vices or changed who and what I put my faith into. I used to explain that it's like God has put a shield over me to protect me from harm; after reading Max Lucado's Wild Grace, I have realized it wasn't a shield per se, but God's wild grace that protected me.

Wild Grace is a non-fiction book that has been adapted for teens to break down grace in a less superficial way than it is often explained or used. Grace, Lucado explains, is "simply another word for God's tumbling, rumbling reservoir of strength and protection" (59). Grace is something God has given us through Jesus' death that trumps all of the bad things we've done and experienced and helps us persevere through the bad things we have yet to encounter. This book further helps the reader recognize how grace can help them cope with sin, guilt, and other troubles while explaining how to receive that grace from God. The reader is also encouraged to show grace to others upon receiving God's grace for themselves.

As a teen, I was never very intrigued by non-fiction books because there wasn't a story to capture my attention. I know this isn't the case with all readers, but I always wanted to skip ahead because material, especially in self-help type books, wasn't intriguing enough. I think what sets Wild Grace apart from the rest are the questions and talking points the book contains throughout. These questions helped focus my attention in on connecting the material with my real life experiences. Questions like, "When was the last time someone did something truly awful to you? Did you respond with a grudge or with grace?" (90) not only encourage the reader to think about what they're reading, but it also provides a great segue for parents to discuss the book with their teens.

Similarly, there are personal stories scattered throughout the book to bring the content to life. While I didn't particularly connect with all of these stories, I think as a teen reader I would be more interested and they would make more of an impact on me. I think these stories can help entertain the reader while aiding in comprehension of material. I particularly enjoyed how Max Lucado shared his struggle with alcoholism and his experience drinking as a teen; this is just one of the many examples of how Lucado does not talk down to his reader and steps down to their level to teach and encourage. Such transparency is what makes Max Lucado one of my favorite Christian authors.

Bottom Line: Although this book is adapted for teens, Wild Grace is a perfectly acceptable book for someone of any age, especially "baby Christians". I think this would make a particularly great stocking stuffer or last minute Christmas gift to any teen in your life who you should be reminded of God's love and grace for them. 4/5 Stars for Adults / 5/5 Stars for Teens

Beautiful, angst filled, Heartbreaking

THE STORY: The Black Dagger Brotherhood is a group of warrior vampires who are to protect the civilian vampires from threats. Zsadist is one of the brotherhood but goes his own way. Kidnapped as child and forced to become a blood slave (used to feed on by another vampire), Z was also raped and sexually abused by his master. As a result of his century of being a slave, Z is physically and emotionally scarred. As LOVER AWAKENED begins, Z has been searching for several weeks for a female vampire, Bella, who was kidnapped by one of the soulless humans that the Brotherhood is fighting. Bella's loss has hit Z hard and he is obsessed with her. Bella was immediately attracted to Z when they met. Weeks of captivity have begun to make her question who she is. This is their story.

OPINION: I love this book. It is my favorite of the series. I am a sucker for those damaged men who are healed by the women who love them. Z is just an amazing character. He has been damaged both inside and out by his time as a blood slave. He begins to heal, however, from the first time he meets Bella. His determination to find her or to avenge her when he believes her dead allows him to care about her in a safe way. Z believes himself dirty and unworthy of love because of the abuse he suffered. His contempt for himself is so incredibly difficult to read at times. At the same time, his ability to care about those around him even as he claims he doesn't shows the resilience of the spirit. I loved everything about Bella and Z's story. They have a very difficult road, but this book is emotional and sexy and painful all at once.

WORTH MENTIONING: The stories in these books are multiplying. That means that there are stories that aren't resolved here and there is less time for the main couple.

FINAL DECISION: This book is painful and heartbreaking and incredibly beautiful at the same time.

CONNECTED BOOKS: LOVER AWAKENED is the third book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. It can be read as a standalone although it is best read in the context of the others in the series since Bella and Z's story actually begins in LOVER ETERNAL.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Good series

Ok, so I don't write a lot of reviews, I do however read them and that is why I decided to write a review on this book. I stumbled across J R Ward by accident and read a review on her and it said she is a must read author. So I purchased the first book in her Brotherhood of the Black Dagger series on my Kindle, $5.99 so I thougt what the heck. It was a good book so then I purchased the second book and it was also good. I read some review about the third book and an overwhelmingly 799 people gave it 5 stars and only 7 people gave it 1 star, so of course I read those 7 reviews. I would agree with some of what those 7 people said about the books in general.
I'm not going to go into the story line of these books, they are a paranormal romance series with a lot of hot sex scenes, if you are into that you will most likely like these books. One reviewer said that she could not get past the slang they use. I would agree with that, these vampires are hundreds of years old and the language they use is way too modern for them. It really does not make scence. These books do not read like any other romance novel series I have ever read. You have the main characers but there is also several more story lines going on in the book. I know she is doing this because she wants us to be familiar with all the characters because they will eventually have their own story, but some of it is just in the way, and I skip through parts that don't interest me. I have read 3 of these book so far and the skipping has not been a problem with the main story line.
Ok so also there is A LOT of male bonding in these books. I mean these guys in the "Brotherhood" are way comfortable in their heterosexualness because they are very free with themselves around each other, also something else I'm not used to in a romance novel. I gave these books a 4 star rating because they are good and I want to keep on reading them. J R Ward is not the best of writers, I have read much better and the stroy lines can get a little crowded at times that is why I can not give it 5 stars.
Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark Series is a 5 STAR series. She is a wonderful writer and her books are very good. They are a paranoral romance series and erotica, so if that is not your thing then don't read them but if it is you will not be dissapointed.

Good stories, but not much practical information

The title refers to the prevalence of a "slash" in people's lives these days - people who instead of seeing themselves as an "accountant", consider themselves an "accountant/musician" or "accountant/designer" or "accountant/parent" or whatever. People with two jobs, basically.

The premise was intriguing to me since I've always considered myself a "slash", if you will. A jack of all trades, a renaissance man, etc. From my very first job I've always done work on the side and have added quite a few "slashes" to my ID over the years, so I was really interested in this book's promise to help you integrate them into a single identity.

What I got was a lot of stories about other people's multiple careers and some generic tidbits like "develop your new career while you're on the job". Lame.

If you want to get inspired by hearing stories of other people who are making money from side interests, go for it. If you're trying to do the same, don't expect any revelations.

Don't waste your money

I have bought this book in order to figure out HOW to make my interests a slash career. Instead, this book is nothing that stories about and resumes of people who have multiple careers. I was hoping the first chapter was just an example, but the whole monotonous book is the same.

Lots of buried treasure here

It's been awhile since I read a book that I wanted to recommend to career and business clients. This one makes the cut

Other authors have attempted to describe what Alboher calls "slash careers," with considerably less success. What makes this book work is the emphasis on realism. Alboher offers numerous examples. We learn about teachers who become real estate agents and fashion models, lawyers who become artists and writers, and at least one banker who does hip-hop.

Because so many stories can be overwhelming, I do not recommend attempting to read the book in a single sitting. Instead, read a little here and there and begin to take notes.

The second part of Alboher's book attempts to be a "how-to," but continues to use stories as examples. I believe Alboher's guidelines are unusually realistic and thoughtful. She covers points that might escape the new slash careerist, such as legal and ethical conflicts of interest, inviting specialists to supplement her knowledge. For example, she asked a workplace specialist to create 10 guidelines for balancing parenting and career. A flextime specialist explains the need to focus on economic reasons for flextime, not just good intentions. And a coach presents an excellent "ask your friends" exercise that would help almost anyone exploring a new field.

I particularly resonated to the section on boundaries between the two careers. In my own case, I still maintain a career consulting website. But I also offer copywriting and website marketing services, based on what I learned from this site. I find my clients don't have a problem, but marketing consultants often become critical and advise me to drop one or the other. Alboher answers the question, "How much to tell?" correctly: "It depends."

Finally, at the end of the book, Alboher presents some examples of resumes, bios and other promotional material. It's important to view these pages as possibilities, not models. Alboher carefully points out that some people have totally different resumes for their careers, while others offer creative combos. Apart from being slash examples, the resumes could be viewed as models of resume-writing. The "Billy Shakes" bio is not to be missed.

So what's not to like?

Well, I couldn't help noting that most (though not all) of Alboher's examplary slashers were on the young side -- rarely over 40, let alone 50 or 60. My clients tend to be mid-career professionals and they'll gain a lot from this book. But they may have trouble seeing themselves in many of the stories.

Second, nearly everyone in this book seemed to fall into a second career by accident and to achieve great success, apparently without effort. There's little sense of planning or decision-making. In contrast, Herminia Ibarra's Working Identity takes readers through struggles of ordinary career changers who conducted research and attempted to create a process. Alboher quotes briefly from Working Identity and I believe these books nicely complement one another.

Toward the end we do hear about a few conflicts, as when a teacher took too many absences to pursue his wrestling career. But surely some people set out to seek a slash, only to find they lack aptitude or interest as they explore further.

These quibbles do not represent fatal flaws. I plan to recommend this book to a few of my current clients as soon as I finish posting this review.

Like a lifeline

Loved this book! Buying more for friends. Kolenda brings deep insight into some experiences that can be confusing and contrary to the life of faith and victory we all hope to walk in. I can sense the author's true desire to see people helped along the way. The chapter alone on holding on to God's Word of promise is well worth the price of this small but potent book.

an interesting study

I assume this is Eiler's doctoral dissertation that he re-edited for publication. At any rate, that's what it reads like. This is pretty tough going — as it should be — and not necessarily easier reading than the relevant sections of Pannenberg's Systematic Theology itself. Dr. Eilers demonstrates an excellent grasp of Pannenberg's theology over-all (no mean feat in itself) and interacts well with the secondary literature and with the common criticisms of Pannenberg's theology. The concluding section laments the limitations imposed on Pannenberg's exposition of the role of the church in the modern world that arise from his separation of dogmatics and ethics. I recommend this book to all Pannenberg fans — but I fear others may get lost. This is certainly not a general reader book
