Meg Stout was raised in a mixed race Mormon family. As a teenager, she was shocked to learn of rumors regarding Joseph Smith's polygamy. For decades she harbored significant doubts about the faith in which she'd been raised. However Joseph Smith wasn't just the founder of her religion. He was the husband of one of her ancestors and beloved of other ancestors who sacrificed everything in their attempt to fulfill God's will within Joseph Smith's religious context. Ms. Stout's ancestors also include one of the two major conspirators who orchestrated Joseph's death. Ms. Stout's used the skills from decades of advanced development and engineering to methodically examine data from all credible sources, without compunction to align with any existing assumptions or avoid any taboos. In the process, she crafts a coherent and satisfying narrative describing the real, fallible, sometimes evil, and yet noble characters who together gave birth to Mormonism. In the process, she uncovers intrigue that explains why Joseph Smith and his wife, Emma, would have been willing to be misunderstood and reviled rather than betray the terrible secrets of those they loved. Ms. Stout also discusses why Brigham Young may have made polygamy tantamount to a mandatory requirement, the more shocking as it becomes clear that Joseph Smith doesn't appear to have envisioned a society where every man was required to take on a plural wife.

This is a compelling book that seeks to set the record straight about the misunderstood , often scandalous, early years of the LDS church. It is not for the faint of heart! Stout obviously did a ton of research and presents it all in a thoughtful and incredibly suspenseful way!

About the Author

Mark J. Kaiser is a professor and director of the Research & Development Division at the Center for Energy Studies, Louisiana State University. His primary research interest covers the oil, gas, and refining industry and is related to cost assessment, fiscal system analysis, economic and infrastructure modeling, and valuation studies. He is widely published with work appearing across a broad spectrum of energy, engineering, mathematics, scientific and policy journals.

Dr. Kaiser received his doctorate in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from Purdue University and has consulted and served as technical advisor to corporations and government agencies.

Some of the most renowned political philosophy ever--so why does it seem so dull?

As a teen, I read a lot of Montesquieu in French. I loved his style and his clarify. What's amazing is how boring this book seems in English. Is it the translation? Brief as this is, I found it very difficult slogging--and I'm a big reader of Hegel etc. Strangely dull.

Great Introduction

Montesquieu was one of the great influences on Madison, Locke and others that developed the governmental approach in the United States. This book has translations of excerpts from three of his works - "Persian Letters", "Considerations on the Causes of the Roman's Greatness and Decline", and his magnum opus, "The Spirit of Laws." The latter, in particular, discusses such areas of governance as the bicameral legislature, the triune structure of executive, legislative and legal branches of govrnment, slavery, religion and the roles each plays in a republic, a monarchy and a tyranny.

Eminently readable and expertly translated with a great introduction and biography by Melvin Richter, the book will provide the curious reader with a great introduction to Montesquieu and the political thoughts he espoused.

About the Author
Aldia A. Rakova, a Russian language instructor, linguist, and translator at the University of Iowa, has taught the language at all levels from elementary to advanced linguistic courses. She is also project coordinator for translation projects, terminologist (English―Russian medical database), and translator of Russian and Polish at the University of Iowa Translation Laboratory. She has published numerous articles on Slavic linguistics, teaching methodology, and the cultural aspects of translation.

Ray Parrott has taught Russian language and literature classes at the Universities of Iowa and Michigan for many years and currently holds the rank of Professor and Chair, Department of Russian, at the University of Iowa. He has authored, edited, and translated numerous books and articles on literary and pedagogical issues, in addition to serving actively in his field’s major professional associations. For the past decade he has edited the AATSEEL Newsletter for the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages, a major forum for language instructors.

some glaring issues, but otherwise ok

I bought this book after purchasing the truly stellar "Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar" expecting this to be of the same quality. The book *is* useful and *does* have a lot of information packed in there, and the organizational structure does have some good ideas that make the exercises (which are good) hang together well. I have two main problems with the book beyond this. First, you are absolutely sand blasted with vocab. This may be good or bad, depending on your point of view, but I found it to mostly be bad, because it wasn't designed with absorption/acquisition in mind. I think this would be a great review or refresher for someone who was already very advanced with both grammar and vocabulary. Not so much for somebody trying to build up to that point.

The bigger problem is that unlike the Grammar Outline, or basically any other Russian course on the market, the vocabulary is presented without any accent marks. I can't imagine why they did this, since a word's stress is so critical to developing proper Russian pronunciation (much more so than for say, English or Spanish). Especially since stress shifts in case endings or verb conjugations can lead to hilarious or tragic misunderstandings or no understanding at all, this decision just doesn't make any sense to me.

Definitely recommendable

I agree with some of the other reviewers that this book requires a pretty solid knowledge of Russian grammar and vocabulary - but this is exactly why I like it. As an advanced learner, it seems to be more difficult to find learning material that is demanding enough to take you further. Especially when you've been dealing with newspaper articles and written language most of the time and didn't have enough exposure to the vocabulary used in everyday situations. The authors do a very good job of presenting various ways of using the new vocab (i.e. three different sentences with a slightly different way of using a word/expression); there are a lot of exercises, and there is the necessary repetition and reoccurrence of learned vocab that helps it stick.

A good idea gone bad! Forget it!

Schaum's "Russian Vocabulary." This is supposed to a text in vocabulary building for everyday situations. However, the authors/publisher really missed the proverbial boat: There are no accent marks for any of the words in this book! The book title should be "We'll Show You What the Words Look Like in Print, But We Won't Tell You How to Pronounce Them Correctly." Any student of Russian knows how unpredictable the stress of Russian words is. It's really a rather nasty little joke to sell you a vocabulary book without the accent marks. You would have to look each word up in a dictionary to find out how to say it -- an impossible task. Ironically, accent marks are included in Schaum's Russian Grammar book. In short, this book is totally useless for learning new vocabulary unless you want to risk putting the accent on the wrong syllable (and perhaps totally changing the meaning of the word). What were they thinking!

Change And The Generation Gap

Adolescence is a time in which the behaviors of childhood are abandoned and the roles of adulthood are taken up. This book describes the different ways in which youths arrive at their adult roles.

In very stable, unchanging cultures youths learn from both their parents and their grandparents how to act as adults. These are postfigurative cultures, thus named because they look back to the past for guidance. Many native cultures were postfigurative before they gained access western culture via radio and TV.

Societies which exist in a state of change are called cofigurative cultures. Many western cultures in the twentieth century are examples of this. In this circumstance both youths and adults learn from their peers. Much of the past must be abandoned as new circumstances arrive demanding new behaviors.

Mead proposes that a third, prefigurative culture may emerge in the future. This type of society is subject to continued, radical change. In it adults learn from their children. Youths have the adaptability to cope with rapid change. They must 'make up' their behavior as they go along. Peers can help but even they remain largely ignorant of 'what is right' as change is so rapid.

This book was written just after the counter-culture of the 1960s. At the time it must have seemed that the world was going to experience an alarming rate of change. As a result of the baby boom youth seemed to be taking over the world. Prefigurative culture never eventuated but of course that is not to say it can never happen.

These deal with a range of subjects related to biblical interpretation in the twenty-first century. The result is a multi-dimensional introduction to the subject for the Bible reader who wishes to know how to approach some of the vexing problems of the biblical text and, more importantly, simply to read the Bible in such a way as to gather the most from this experience.

A little disappointing....

The information presented is quite useful and I'm sure it's accurate but still, I thought I'd be getting some head's up info about "tells" for spotting a psychopath.. it's more like you'd have to have the person's criminal history, financial history, employment history, then you could answer 150 questions and get a accurate feel for where they are on the psychopath spectrum...

Not pleasant, but necessary

Navarro, a long time FBI agent shows you how to spot these predators in human form, no matter how charming, slick and empathetic they seem to be. The essay (book is too grand a term for this article-length publication) is built around a checklist of 150 questions that will help you see these people for what they really are.

Navarro's advice for dealing with a psychopath: Get as far away from him or her as possible.
