Best anatomy text for medical students.

Easily the best anatomy atlas for medical students like myself. It is laid out exactly as I want it and easier (and more accurate) then trying to google what I'm looking for. Simply search for the structure on my ipad or computer and my question is answered. It further aids my studies by placing easy to read diagrams next to actual cadaver pictures. The only thing I could ask for is a bigger index of terms in the back of the paperback, but let's be real, I rarely use the paperback.

Think is the best Atlas I have come across. So much easier to understand the dissections and anatomy the way Dr. Olinger has designed his masterpiece textbook. I highly recommend it.

Tim O'Brien has been writing about Vietnam in one way or another ever since he served there as an infantryman in the late 1960s. His earliest work on the subject, If I Die in a Combat Zone, was an intensely personal memoir of his own tour of duty; his books since then have featured many of the same elements of fear, boredom, and moral ambiguity but in a fictional setting. In 1994 O'Brien wrote In the Lake of the Woods, a novel that, while imbued with the troubled spirit of Vietnam, takes place entirely after the war and in the United States. The main character, John Wade, is a man in crisis: after spending years building a successful political career, he finds his future derailed during a bid for the U.S. Senate by revelations about his past as a soldier in Vietnam. The election lost by a landslide, John and his wife, Kathy, retreat to a small cabin on the shores of a Minnesota lake--from which Kathy mysteriously disappears.

Was she murdered? Did she run away? Instead of answering these questions, O'Brien raises even more as he slowly reveals past lives and long-hidden secrets. Included in this third-person narrative are "interviews" with the couple's friends and family as well as footnoted excerpts from a mix of fictionalized newspaper reports on the case and real reports pertaining to historical events--a m�lange that lends the novel an eerie sense of verisimilitude. In this beautifully written, often haunting, but ultimately disappointing book, that conflict continues to drag at the life of John Wade, an upwardly mobile politician and senatorial candidate. The revelation that he was present at a Vietnamese village massacre (read My Lai) and had artfully buried that fact derails his political career overnight, and he flees with his much-loved wife, Kathy, to a remote hideaway in Minnesota's north woods. One morning he awakes, after a night of terrible visions, to find her gone. A huge search fails to locate her, and police suspicion turns on Wade. Then he too disappears. Ever a man who loved tricks and mystery, known to his Army buddies as Sorcerer, has Wade always lived a lie? Did he kill Kathy and put her body in the lake? Did they escape their problems together? O'Brien openly asks the reader such questions, in a series of rhetorical footnotes that amount to an uncomfortable authorial intrusion. An ongoing series of chapters with quotes from My Lai testimony, books on magic, General Custer, military violence and opinions of people in the book about what really happened with John and Kathy goes seriously astray. These faults distract from, but cannot completely offset, the power of O'Brien's narrative, his affinity for abnormal psychological states, his remarkable painting of the hostile autumn solitudes. It seems like a book that needed more work to live up to its best, and perhaps editor Seymour Lawrence's death last winter deprived it of that. O'Brien develops several maddeningly plausible explanations, allowing readers to draw their own conclusions in this dark but wonderful novel that should gain him a host of new fans. Chilling, even on re-reading

I first read this book about 5 years ago, and ended up debating it for weeks with folks in my office. I recently picked it up again, & found it just as haunting, compelling & intriguing. I did, though, take away a different feel from the book than I had the first time I read it.
It is no spoiler that the author does not solve the book's central mystery: the author tells you that if you want answers, "read another book." Readers can reach different conclusions as to the fate of Kathy Wade. Indeed, if my own experience is any guage, the same reader can reach a different conclusion on subsequent readings.
This book will mean different things to different people. For some, it is a mystery; for others, a dark love story; for others, it is a tale of Vietnam.
O'Brien's devices - the Evidence & Hypothesis chapters interspersed throughout the book - work fabulously. The Evidence chapters give a variety of outside perspectives which inform, or offer differing views, if not explanations, on the text, which jumps back & forth itself between the present & various points in the past. The Hypothesis chapters propose alternative answers to the central riddle.
O'Brien's clear prose is made more interesting, because the reader knows he is only getting one sliver, one part of the whole picture, and may be more or less "true".
If you have not read this book, do so. If you have, read it again: you will be amazed, entranced again -- & it may be a whole new experience for you.

Loved It!

I got this book first assigned in my English class in college and I was getting the feel that the theme of the class was not going to be about dreams as listed in the catalogue, but rather the Vietnam war (weird, but it did go like that). So naturally, I got bummed when we had to start reading this book; however, as I read more, I got really into it. I would go into the Dining Commons and I would end up there for a good hour well after I finished my meal just reading on and on. The way it is written through a story, theories, and evidence is something I have not read before and it enticed me. Trust me when I say that I think the people in my class who bs'd the essay for the paper regarding this book truly missed out on a great read.

So much to talk about: what we all carry: secrets, lies, past traumus that still haunt, what constitutes evidence and truth, how we construct and reconstruct our public and private selves. And the narrative structure itself generated interesting comments. This is a very rich book.

Beautiful art with historical significance

This book now becomes the main source for top-quality representations of the shrine and temple paintings of Dunhuang. In the early Middle Ages, Dunhuang was a major center on the Silk Road, and became a huge focus for religious activity, mostly Buddhist but also Daoist and other. The caves were then abandoned and sealed, to be rediscovered, entered, and explored in the 19th and 20th centuries. Much of the art was carried off, but the walls remained, and the head of the Dunhuang Institute here very ably introduces them and gives the history and meaning of the art. One interesting aspect is the physical variety of local people: the portraits show a wide range of physical types, from Russian-like to Persian, Turkic and Chinese. Every lover of Asian art should have this book.

Gorgeous color photos on every page

This book is a visual feast. Since the impact of the cave art depends so much on color, the big color photos in this book are of major importance. The quality of reproduction is stunning.

This is a great way to whet your appetite for the cave art of Dunhuang. And to decide which caves should go on your must-see list. Every cave is identified by number, the dynasty when it was created, and the periods of any restorations. Because of this careful identification by Tang, Qing, Wei or whatever, studying the photos is a great way to get familiar with the styles and iconography of various periods.

Both paintings and sculptures are beautifully photographed. And the text offers descriptions of the legends and happenings portrayed in the narrative paintings.

I hope to visit Dunhuang, and this is just what I need to be prepared to appreciate this ancient cave art. But I can also see buying this book as a coffee table book, if you're interested in the art of the Silk Road.

There is an excellent introduction on the history of the caves and their architecture and a chapter on conservation activities in the caves. The author is a thorough expert in the field, and a clear and interesting writer.

Highly recommended for art lovers.

I liked this book because it really is everything I thought it might be. The text is great and easy to read and the photos are excellent. One of the best books out on Buddhist caves in China. Highly recommended!

About the Author

Jonathan Berk is the A.P. Giannini Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before coming to Stanford, he was the Sylvan Coleman Professor of Finance at Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to earning his PhD, he worked as an Associate at Goldman Sachs (where his education in finance really began).

Professor Berk’s research interests in finance include corporate valuation, capital structure, mutual funds, asset pricing, experimental economics, and labor economics. His work has won a number of research awards including the TIAA-CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award, the Smith Breeden Prize, Best Paper of the Year in The Review of Financial Studies, and the FAME Research Prize. His paper, “A Critique of Size-Related Anomalies,” was selected as one of the two best papers ever published in The Review of Financial Studies. In recognition of his influence on the practice of finance he has received the Bernstein-Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award, the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence, and the Roger F. Murray Prize.

He served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance, Director of the Western Finance Association, �Academic Director of the Financial Management Association, is a Fellow of the Financial Management Association, and is a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Professor Berk is married, with two daughters, and is an avid skier and biker.

Peter DeMarzo is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance and current Vice President of the American Finance Association. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches MBA and Ph.D. courses in Corporate Finance and Financial Modeling. In addition to his experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Professor DeMarzo has taught at the Haas School of Business and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Professor DeMarzo received the Sloan Teaching Excellence Award at Stanford, and the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley.

Journals in Economic Analysis and Policy, as well as a Director of the American Finance Association. He has served as Vice President and President of the Western Finance Association. His recent work has examined issues of the optimal design of contracts and securities, and the influence of information asymmetries on stock prices and corporate investment. He has received numerous awards including the Western Finance Association Corporate Finance Award and the Barclays Global Investors/Michael Brennan best-paper award from The Review of Financial Studies.

About the Author
With Old Yeller, Fred Gipson secured his place as one of the finest novelists in America. The book was published to instant acclaim and has become one of the most beloved children's classics ever written. A MUST FOR YOUNG READERS!

I'm a 7th grade teacher and I introduced my students to this novel for the first time this year. To my amazement they had never even heard of OLD YELLER. Now, middle school students can be the toughest audience in the world but THEY LOVED THIS BOOK.
Author Fred Gipson perfectly captures the time period of Texas in the late 1800's and the challenges of daily life. Into the mix of chores and adventures on the farm is the universal bond of a boy and his dog. Travis and Old Yeller are two characters that any child will immediately connect with and grow to love. And naturally as many novels geared towards younger readers, the conclusion will remain with them long after the novel has been read.
On a side note I must also recommend the classic Walt Disney version of OLD YELLER (VHS or DVD). Young readers will enjoy the similarities and differences between novel and movie. It's an excellent example to build discussion or writing lessons involving comparisons or contrasts.
And while I have continually mentioned young readers I should also comment that OLD YELLER is a must-read for people of any age group. So the next time you need to be entertained by a great novel, pick up this classic.

A good book; A sad, but good book

This heart-warming book is about Old Yeller, (Which mean 'Yellow' in those days) a stray golden-brown dog which Travis' little brother (Little Arliss)finds. Travis hates the dog, who they named 'Old Yeller', until Old Yeller saves Travis' life. Soon they are best buddies, but the fate that is awaiting at the end brings them apart. This book is perfect for ages 7 and up, and is a terrific day-to-day read. This has 16 exciting chapters for either read aloud or silent reading. If your lookin' for a book to read, It's Old Yeller.

Old Yeller is the beautiful, touching story of a boy and his big "yeller" dog.

When Travis's father goes on a cattle drive, Travis takes over the farm. He takes on a big task and is furious to find a big, one-eared, yellow dog eats thier meat, plays in their drinking water, and runs away when his family is in dire need of help. But Old Yeller proves himself when he saves Travis's litttle brother, Arliss, from a mad mother bear.

I loved reading Old Yeller because the story became real. I love dogs and it was amazing how detailed the story was. It was touching to read about how close Travis and Old Yeller were brought together.

Old Yeller is a classic novel everyone can read. Fred Gipson tells about the love and loyalty the characters possess for one another. I highly recommend this touching story that filled me with emotion and made my day forever.

A lot of information in a small package

The Pocket Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa is a good book to take with you on a trip to southern Africa. Only 144 pages, it's small and lightweight but contains helpful charts about habitat zones and mammals that inhabit them and a detailed one-page explanation of each mammal, including a clear photo (sometimes two: one male and one female)as well as identifying marks, track, habitat, habits, food, and breeding season.

At the end of the book is an 8-page section on identifying droppings as well as how to incorporate this information into other signs in the area that might tell more about the animal.

I took it on a two-week photo safari in South Africa and found it very clear, informative, and easy to use.

A True Pocket Guide

This book is truly a pocket guide it's only 144 pages thick & weighs just 187 grammes. It has all sorts of mammals from the very large to the very small & they are in sections so are easy to find,it gives sizes,approx weights,lifespan it also has information about animal footprint shape & size on each page & which part of Africa each animal can be found as well as colour identifying pictures & the differences between male & female.it also has information about each animal's vocalisation
At the back of the book are 9 pages on identifying dung & 3 pages of footprints
