In 1943 the treaty ports were returned to China and most of their inhabitants were interned by the Japanese. yet the record of their residence remains in Shanghai's solid office buildings, in Tianjin's mock Tudor facades, and in the Edwardian villas of Beidahei and Xiamen. About the Author
Frances Wood studied Chinese at the universities of Cambridge, London and Peking, and between 1972 and 1988 travelled extensively in China. She is now Head of the Chinese Collections in the British Library. She is the author of Did Marco Polo Go to China?, also the subject of a Channel 4 documentary, and Handgrenade Practice in Peking: My Part in the Cultural Revolution (John Murray, 2000).

Fairly good but does not consult Chinese sources

This is an interesting book to read, and seems to a good job at conveying the lively, chaotic, and bustling life of ignorant Westerners in the treaty ports of China, like Shanghai, Port Amoy (now called Xiamen) and others. But while it is interesting to read, it suffers from one of the same faults that so many of the Westerners in that book had, it does not consult Chinese sources. Another minor annoyance to some younger China students like me is the way it is inconsistent about the systems of romanization it uses. Despite these flaws (which are comparatively minor) this is an interesting book to read.

I found this an interesting but superficial account of British life in the Treaty Ports of China. So often Ms. Wood takes the reader on a provocative path, only to leave them wondering what happened. For example: where were all of the Anglo-Chinese children that no doubt were propagated during this time? Out of sight out of mind I guess?
The flavours and tastes of Empire are there to be tasted though, throw in little Somerset Maugham and you have some good escapist reading.

Overall, a wonderful book. A detailed list of items needed to make the cookies, with recipes, lots of pictures, 11 practice worksheets. And lots of ideas that I never thought to do with cookies. I see Christmas gifts and many wonderful creations from this one book. The book also includes directions or templates for gingerbread houses, bowls, boxes and gingerbread ceramic. A great resource for the beginner cookier and a way to spark some creativity in the experienced cookier.

Amazing booklet. Step by step instructions from equipment

Amazing booklet.
Step by step instructions from equipment, recipes to decorating. And a bit of history of the Hungarian gingerbread.
Lots of practice sheets at the back of the book for decorating patterns.
Recommend it for the whole family for ideas and for hours of fun.
Make sure to get Tunde's other books as well.
I'm a complete beginner and here are a few biscuits and candle holders I've made for Christmas.

Gingerbread art is very unique. Not too many know the art and those who do are not most willing to share.
This book is a dream come true. Tunde and Aniko have put together a very detailed step-by-step book. The book has recipes, techniques and practice sheets for piping.
