Recipes? This is not a cookbook! This is Mimi Sheraton’s 21st Century Food Encyclopedia! A coup de maître: the knowledge, the research, the finesse, the precision, the sources, the history, down to the minutest details. It is an overwhelming achievement.
I cannot stay away from it. I keep going back for more and more delights old and new and long-cherished foods while throughout the whole book that loving passion of food of hers shines and permeates the entire masterpiece.

I have this in paperback and kindle...

This was a gift from my sister who knows that I love food.

Had a lot of fun with this especially in NYC.

Best part is the suggestions about which restaurants to try. I have also made a couple of the recipes.

this type of project is very hard to keep current and I understand that so of course some restaurants had changed their menus and I couldn't find the item that I was looking for.

Also, I skipped a couple because the sanitation standards in NYC are quite high and at least one restaurant that was recommended for some African food had some adverse data against it (evidence of rats) so I passed.

I think that some of the suggestions could be more adventurous... That having been said overall I do love this book.

One of the best food books in a long time.

Blending both history, anecdotes, recipes, and photos Mimi Sheraton has written a book that is worth spending time over. This not a cookbook, it is, like the other "1,000..." books in the series a kind of travelogue through the world of food. The book is divided up by countries/regions of the world, and Ms. Sheraton includes not only the usual countries (France, Italy, etc.) she goes out of her way to include less-popular, though rich in food history, countries (Hungary for example). Designed to be easy to browse through, it's one of the best books on food I've purchased in the last year.

Geologists in Britain were the first to recognize the importance of fossils and the geological record. This books does a magnificent job laying out the 2 billion year geology of this small island. You can clearly see why 19th century scientists in Britain could no longer deny the billion year old history of the Earth. Beautifully illustrated and well written.

It is a fairly short book (268 pages) so it's easily covered in a single semester and it is an easy read. But it still covers the material needed to understand the basics of quality.

Action Comes From Reading LEAVING JOHNNY BEHIND

At a time in the United States where the message of "Change we can believe in" is being touted, it would be dangerous not to see that being passed on to the attention we give to illiteracy. In 2009 we are looking at over 16% of this country that are unable to read or write well. That is unacceptable, and reading a book like LEAVING JOHNNY BEHIND should make all of us ashamed to expect so much of those molding our future without giving them the proper tools they need to do their best.

We can't allow outselves to get stuff in the rut of saying that is the parent's problem or an issue for the schools to handle. We as concerned and responsible men and women have to say enough is enough. It is not okay for our young people to go through school without being able to read or write at a level where they can compete in the world. We're not going to stand by any longer and allow entertainment and entertainers to tell our future what they should be. WE are going to have to let them know they create their own destinies.

I applaud Anthony for taking the address these issues and give us solutions so we can begin to act. Don't leave it just up to elected officials. Take a stand in your area and do what you can to help those around you so they can in turn do the same.

Education is too important for us to leave to chance. Action is required, and we have to be willing to start today.

It is the heart touching account of how one principal finally found his way from darkness to light in teaching all children to read.

It contains a dynamic message of hope for schools willing to face the unpleasant reality that current practices are responsible for reading failure and that programs that secure success for every student are available.
