Kindle formatting hard to read

I purchased this textbook for my kindle, believing that it would be more convenient to use than the larger print textbook. The format is essentially a scan of each book page, which makes the print tiny on a kindle fire. You must zoom in on sections of each page in order to make it legible because you cannot adjust the text size. Doing so is very distracting and inhibits the reader from comparing text to any graphics. These frustrations, combined with the outrageous price tag for an electronic book, have led me to consider it my worst kindle purchase.

Good Book to Add to a Collection

It is a pretty comprehensive nutrition book with all the basic essentials that you need to get a good grasp on the more biochemical aspects of how nutrients interact with the body. If you haven't had a basic biochemistry class, some of this is might be a little over your head. I would recommend this for undergrad nutrition classes and graduate students who are looking for a quick reference guide.

An intermediate level text, often useful, sometimes not

I studied from the 3rd edition as a student and now I own this 6th edition to occasionally look things up for the work I do.

If you are a health-savvy consumer looking to delve deeper into human nutrition, consider carefully that this is a textbook authored for students with previous exposure to organic chemistry and probably rudimentary A&P. If you want a basic but packed Nutrition text to help you sort thru the misinformation about Nutrition that you'll find on the web, try Nutrition: Concepts and Controversies instead. It's not perfect, but will at least steer one away from wackadoodle information that can be found on The Internets.

If you are a student or a professional, rest assured that this Gropper/Smith book is one you'll probably want to keep on your shelf for a few years. It contains an excellent assortment of figures, and the chapters on each micronutrient are logically broken down into sections on Digestion and Absorption, Deficiency, Toxicity, Interactions with Other Nutrients, etc.
If the monochrome format sounds a bit Spartan, consider that the 3rd edition was only black & white; the magenta color now used for headings, etc. is a vast improvement, making it easier to find information.
If you are looking for a more in-depth text, I'd recommend Biochemical, Physiological, and Molecular Aspects of Human Nutrition, 3e.

My main complaint is that it still seems to not contain all of the information that you would expect from a text at this level; I realize this is a subjective complaint and that it is rare for a book to be your "one stop shopping" source for information, but this disappointment happens more often than I'd like. Another complaint is that the citations seem outdated in many cases, especially when there is discussion of disease; while I realize that it is a tremendous feat to stay on top of the current body of scientific literature in the field (esp. with a new edition being published only every 4 years), I would like to see future editions be more contemporary. Ideally, maintaining this text would be a full-time job for Sareen Gropper and Jack Smith, but that's not the world we live in.

A well deserved five stars, and nothing less, is what this novel is getting from me. I have awaited the release of book 7, Sworn To Vengeance, and was not disappointed in anyway. It is the perfect continuation for this amazingly enchanted and magical series.

It was written so well that I'd swear I was reading from a history book. If you haven't read this amazing series yet, I'd say do it now....don't wait.
I must give credit where it is due, job well done Terah Edun. I can't wait to see what happens next in book 8.

Wonderful book! Can't wait for the next one!

This book was wonderful! I loved the relationship that developed between Ciardis, Sebastian, and Thanar. It was surprising, but think it'll make things more interesting. Also, this book didn't feel rushed and had the right amount of detail. Definitely worth the wait. However, I hope the next book comes out quickly!

Terah Edun has done it again!!!!

Terah Edun has done it again. In the last book we were left with a cliff hanger. The group was sitting outside the city with great perils between them and their destination. Ciardis was torn and at odds with both Sebastian and Thanar. This book picks up right where the previous one ended. On the cliff (literally). I don't want to give anything away so Ill leave the plot at that. However in this book we see our favorite characters grow even more. We have plot twists and of course lots of magic. Terah also allows us to see our characters in some new lights. In Sworn to Vengeance we see a lot of character development and really get to understand how they all tie in together a little bit better. Especially our very complicated dragon ambassador Raisa. This book is definitely worth the read and keeps you wanting more. I cannot wait for the next book in the series to be released and to see what happens next. Just be prepared to devote all your time to reading because you will not want to put it down once you start.

Charming festive read

Andrea Kane can do no wrong in my eyes, she has proven she deserves the place of my favourite author. I came across her suspense novels 3 years ago and have loved every one. I am still working my way through her back list. Well this gem was announced to release as an ebook and I knew I wanted to try her holiday story.

This is not a suspense holiday read but an adult fiction, historical romance. Andrea Kane is talented, she writes suspense, romance and historical fiction, I am so impressed.

This is a charming read I highly recommend. The feel of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett mixed into one. I loved both of those as much as this one. I would have loved for it to be a full story but the short story was also perfect.

The characters attach to your heart and the lovely little Noelle adds a lovely touch for a 4 year old girl. I would love to read more of these characters.

What is the meaning of life? All the characters, young and old, figure this out.

Humorous and Heartwarming

Day five of holiday cheer brings a novella that was originally part of the anthology "A Gift of Love", which came out in 1996 from Pocket Books. Its entirely possible I read this when I was younger, since I loved Christmas themed historical romance anthologies, but its equally possible I didn't since I avoided books with 'Judith McKnaught in the credits. In any case, "Yuletide Treasure" has been released as its own e-novella for $0.99, which is totally worth it. Kane's historicals have intriguing characters, if often predictable in plot.

I think this would have been better served as a full length novel. Time passed really quickly so we didn't get to see Eric's change of heart. I'm not sure 90 or so pages is enough to really convince me that after 4 years of being the biggest tyrant this side of grieving he could become as giving as Scrooge after the visit from the Ghosts. The power of True Love indeed.

Despite this, or in spite of that, I enjoyed the antics of Noelle, Fuzzy and the unrelenting patience of Brigitte was not annoying. I was briefly shocked by a revelation from Brigitte in regards to Liza (Noelle's mom and Eric's deceased younger sister), but I shouldn't have been since I guessed at Liza's issues long before they came out in the open.

For the price you can't beat this however. Its heart warming and sweet, with a little heat and a whole lot of humorous moments. Just kind of wink and nod at some of the disbelief moments.

Book Review: Yuletide Treasure

I got my Christmas romance fix with Yuletide Treasure.

This short novella takes place in Victorian England, so the historical setting is a bonus for me, although it didn't play much of a part in the story.

Eric has been holed up in his manor house for years, seeing no one and going nowhere. He's isolated himself since the death of his sister. He has a niece, Noelle, who is returned to him after short stays with many different people in the village -- and she's a terror. Eric decides he needs a governess, and then is convinced that he needs a wife. Even though his demands for privacy and seclusion are unbelievable, he finds Brigitte to accept his terms. It turns out Brigitte has always been in love with Eric, since she was a little girl.

OK, so you have to roll your eyes, but then get over it. It's unlikely, but Brigitte's handling of Noelle is priceless -- as well as her handling of Eric. It's definitely a "happily ever after" story, but that's what I was after.

I could have stayed with these characters a little longer. The novella is only 90 pages, so things must happen very quickly. Eric's transformation is, shall we say, astounding?

On the other hand, it's not a huge investment, gave me warm fuzzies, and ended with a Christmas celebration. So, if that's what you are looking for, you can't go wrong with Yuletide Treasure.

About the Author

Laura J. Petracek, Ph.D., is assistant professor of clinical psychology at National University in Sacramento, CA. She maintains a private practice in San Francisco and is a certified treatment provider for the San Francisco Department of Probation. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselors, and the Nation Association of Social Workers.

Foreword writer Sandra Thomas, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, is director of the doctoral program at the University of Tennessee College of Nursing in Knoxville, TN. She has studied women's anger since 1989. Initial findings from her women's anger study—the first large-scale investigation of the emotion in American women—were published in the 1993 book Women and Anger, which received extensive coverage from national press and television programs.

Not for people who already know they're angry.

I haven't finished this book yet, but I thought it's worth mentioning that this book seems more geared toward women who harbor anger and resentment but are completely unable to recognize it or express it. While I am not aggressive or physically violent, I wanted a book that would help me find healthier ways to express or deal with anger; not a book that helps me to realize I am angry. I already know I'm angry - that's why I bought the book.

Great accompaniment to therapy sessions

I purchased this workbook at my counselor's recommendation. She used copies of some of the activities out of this book in our sessions and I wanted to complete the rest of the book once our sessions were done. The exercises are very helpful in identifying your feelings and how to handle them. I found this book very useful. Obviously, this book is not going to "cure" your anger and should not take the place of speaking with a counselor if you feel you have an anger management problem.

My number one choice for anger management

I have used this tool with both men and women, so I would say first and foremost that some of the tools in here are definitely gender neutral. That said, I work in a women's correctional facility and use tools and techniques in this book on a daily basis to assist women inmates in learning better ways to manage their anger. It is refreshing to see chapters dedicated to how women internalize feelings of pain and anger, as well as acknowledging our society's preference for women to stuff their anger rather than express it. It has a variety of self evaluation tools to encourage insight, and I have had several women request their families to purchase this on their behalf. Highly recommended for anyone that works primarily with women.

The Papaya Edition is a revised and abridged edition of "The Givers and The Takers," formerly published by Macmillan in hardback and Fawcett in paperback. The authors received many requests for their book, so are bringing it back to the public. Papaya Press plans to publish Evatt’s book, "Byron Katie’s How to Stop Arguing with Reality" in the Winter of 2002. Look for it on Amazon.com.

One morning, while I was making toast, a loud inner voice yelled at me, "There are two kinds of people in the world—Givers and Takers. And you’re a heavy Giver who is sexually attracted to heavy Takers." I was stunned by the voice’s message. At the time, I was taking a two-year relationship break, after six failed unions and puddles of tears.

Next, the Voice said, "Quick, get a pen and some large index cards…draw a vertical line down the center of thirty cards…make two columns. Now, write ‘Takers’ at the top of the left hand columns and ‘Givers’ at the top of the right columns. Each card is for a behavior. Write one behavior at the top of each card." I wrote apologizing, breaking up, changing people, communication, control, feelings, friendships, giving orders, intimidation, jealousy, love addiction, pleasing, posture, sex appeal, trusting, careers, and so on.

For a month, the Voice and I filled out the cards which defined the quirky behaviors of the Givers and Takers. After that, I never saw people or myself the same. I dropped my heavy Giver ways and became a balanced woman.

In Chapter Two, I describe the thirty Giver-Taker traits that were revealed to me by the Voice. If you study them, you will be able to identify a Giver or a Taker from across the street. Really!

Interesting concept but lacks substance

The classifications of "givers" and "takers" is an interesting concept. The author's 30 questions for identifying giver or taker traits in yourself or others were good. However, once we have that information about ourselves, the follow-up chapters failed to deliver, in my opinion. There is no real substance for helping you to deal with or change your situation. There were also several pages of filler material, in what is already a small book, that had nothing to do with givers or takers. The sections about couples looking like brother and sister and about similarity in names were *interesting,* but what about it? Were they usually successful relationships or failures? Is it something to look *for* or something to *resist* being influenced by? No helpful information at all provided with that. It was just "fun facts." The glossary was, I guess, meant to be humorous; however, it contains pejorative stereotypes that I imagine some readers might not find amusing. This is definitely not a professional book, so if that is what you are looking for, then I suggest you continue your search.

I Didn't Know I Gave So Much!

I used to give too much to everyone: my teenaged kids, my husband, and my co-workers. I was a pushover for the Takers in my life. This book changed me. Reading it was a "Big Aha!" I now say "no" to others without feeling guilty. I walk different, talk different, and dress different, and I've stopped apologizing so much. Until I read THE GIVERS AND THE TAKERS, I was addicted to pleasing others and didn't know it. I actually thought I was assertive. After reading Evatt's and Feld's 30 Giver Traits, I saw my self-denying pattern clearly. Also, the authors say that "Since Givers expend more energy than they receive, they often eat to make up the loss." That was me, too. This book is not frivolous. It contains an original personality theory that is quite sophisticated.

This is a terrific little book that is exactly as the title suggests. The book defines and describes what is meant by a 'giver', or 'a taker'. Who is the user, read chapter 5, and who is being used? Like a soap opera or a made for T.V. family drama, the scenario can take various shapes. However, these authors make it pretty clear who is what, and why. In chapter 5, we get a look at the sneaky ways takers get what they want. "Giver resentment is easier to spot than taker guilt" (p.106). There is nothing more frustrating than a double bind, for there is no resolution that would please one's partner" (107). The more double binds the more deeply embedded the disparity in power and influence. Heavy resistance is a red flag your partner is a 'taker'. "Givers deny themselves" and wonder why they feel emotionally impoverished. The drama is not about being real it's about playing roles. What do you do when you don't play your role? This book will help you figure out who 'YOU' really are. The chapters begin at the beginning and the book ends with its own questionnaire. Once you familiarize yourself with the easy to learn language of "Giving and Taking," you will be armed to set the drama right. This book is for everyone who is in a relationship that feels out of balance. There are so many examples that hitting the nail on the head, so to speak, should not be too difficult.
